The Southern Slam Tournament in Greenville, SC, welcomed nearly 50 teams from six states over the weekend, providing anyone that stepped on the wrestling mat with some of the toughest challenges that they’d face all year.
Seven Greyhound wrestlers didn’t shy from that challenge, coming on the same weekend where another group of JCHS wrestlers swept a tri-match against GMC Prep and Washington County and the middle school team taking fourth in Gilmer County.
Jacob Skinner’s 8-6 record over the two-day tournament helped him earn an eighth-place finish for the Greyhounds, who also saw multiple wrestlers rally back during their time on the mat. After a loss knocked Hunter McCleskey into the consolation round, he stayed alive for three rounds in the 113-pound class with Noah Pieterick hanging around four rounds into his 120-pound consolation bracket. Arrie Martin won twice in 157 pounds before a pair of defeats.
Jones County heads to another two-day tournament this weekend, wrestling at Jefferson.
