Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

The council voted 4 to 0 to allow open container alcohol at city-approved events. After three citizens spoke against the measure (only 3 people were allowed to speak against it and 3 in support, but no one spoke in support), the council promptly raised their hands to pass it with no discussion. Why did they want to pass it? What is the benefit to the city? No one articulated a vision for this ordinance. When citizens voice their concerns but the council does not acknowledge or address the concerns, people leave the meeting feeling that passage was decided before the meeting and speaking up was futile. It would be helpful if council could discuss why they are voting for a measure before they vote, as the county commissioners do. I am thankful for Mayor Pro Tem Collins and Police Chief Lowe staying after the meeting in the parking lot and discussing the ordinance and addressing concerns.

Sincerely, John Daugherty
