–George Sheffield “And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for He is risen” (Matt 28:5-6) When the women arrived at the tomb that Easter morning, they were greeted by an angel. He said he knew they were seeking Jesus who was crucified. And that was true. They were seeking a crucified Jesus. They were seeking a dead Jesus. They were looking for a lifeless Jesus.
But the angel then said “Ladies He ain’t here. HE IS RISEN.” It’s a good thing to seek Jesus, it’s a smart thing to seek Him.
But people need to be sure they are seeking the Jesus of the Bible and no other kind. First of all the Biblical Jesus isn’t dead.
He Is Risen. You won’t find Him still hanging on a cross or laid out in a tomb. He Is Risen. And Jesus warned that many Jesus imposters would come, and for us not to be taken in by them.
Watch out for a warm and fuzzy Jesus, one that makes you feel good about yourself. The Jesus of the Bible confronted people about their sins, and He made folks feel convicted, uncomfortable, even angry (Lk 5:8).
Watch out for a Jesus that is only concerned about social justice. The Biblical Jesus was more concerned about your sin because that is why He came--to die on a cross to redeem us from sin, not to simply fix social injustices.
Seek Jesus. But seek Him at the right hand of the Father, where you will find Him.
