Destin Howard and the Georgia Lady Bulldogs begin the SEC Tournament against either South Carolina or Texas A&M on Thursday. This year’s tournament will be hosted by the University of Arkansas. Georgia entered the weekend ranked 11th nationally and will enter the SEC Tournament as the No. 2 seed, getting a bye to Thursday’s quarterfinal. Howard has provided key depth for an experienced Georgia pitching staff despite being a freshman. She got the win for Georgia in her most recent appearance, yielding a run in an inning of work during an April 26 win against Mercer.
Thompson hurls shutout in conference tourney
In the USA South Conference Tournament last weekend, former JCHS standout Jacob Thompson stepped up in a big way for Brevard College, helping the Tornadoes to a 2-0 start in a completegame four-hitter on Saturday against Methodist. Thompson struck out five batters and walked three for Brevard, which ended the weekend 2-2. The win improved Thompson to 5-3 on the season, giving him an overall ERA of 3.71. Saturday’s win was the first shutout of the season fro Thompson, who has allowed one earned run or fewer in four of his past five games.
