Buy-in apparent for Lady Hounds following first month of workouts

GIRLS SUMMER HOOPS

The proverbial green light went on Monday with the GHSA’s second dead week of the summer coming to an end, and the Lady Greyhounds were among those eager to get going.

Following a busy month of June, Monday’s voluntary workouts saw around 15 Lady Hounds getting work in. That’s enthusiasm that JCHS head coach ChoRhonda Gwaltney-Harris is excited to see.

“They’re here because they want to be here, I’m excited about this group, they’ve really been working hard.”

Monday resumed things for the Lady Greyhounds following a month that is typically their busiest.

Jones County not only competed against outside competition and took part in team camp settings but also off-court activity. In addition to practicing with Peach and Buford and playing at Warner Robins and Baldwin, the Lady Hounds also got work in during events at GCSU and Clayton State in addition to a live weekend event in Suwannee and Georgia Southern’s FCA camp.

“My month is really June, we do a lot of playing in June,” Gwaltney-Harris said. “We had a really good month and saw a lot of things. We have a lot to work on, but this group right now, they are a group that works hard.”

But there’s been some chemistry- building outside of the heat of competition too by helping to run the Lady Hounds annual kids camp plus traveling as a team to an Atlanta Dream game.

“It’s huge, because they have to like each other to play together,” Gwaltney-Harris said.

Regardless of what the Lady Hounds work on in the summer, however, it’s all tied around one end goal – to flatten the learning curve for a team that graduated three senior starters off last year’s team in Shakiya Betha, Shania Bryant and Kimmya Epps.

“I’m able to get my hands on them before we start in September, they know what I want and need,” Gwaltney-Harris said. “Having them now, when they get here in September, they will know how things need to be done.”
