Finney takes down another opponent, stays unbeaten

Torrez Finney made quick work of his opponent in his most recent MMA bout on Saturday night.

Two minutes and 14 seconds, to be exact.

His knockdown of a heavier opponent, Jake Zogg, kept the Jones County native and former Greyhound two-sport standout unbeaten in MMA competition.

The quick win was by design, according to Finney.

“Get in and get out,” Finney said of his latest win. “I knew I had the skill advantage in a lot of different areas. The moment he got to the ground, I knew it was over.”

Getting a win is always satisfying. But there was another layer to it for Finney. He not only took an opening-round win but did so in showcasing some areas that he had been putting work in on during recent weeks.

“I wanted to work on some different things that I’ve been working on over the past few weeks,” Finney said. “My ground and pound was better, and I think that I showed that off. I have so much more that I can showcase, but it can be hard to do that when the fight does not go that long.”

Finney is now targeting his next fight sometime in August and back at a weight class he is more accustomed to. Finney’s most recent fight in the heavyweight division came as a partial result of fighters in the 185-pound class avoiding overtures from Finney’s camp for a potential fight.

It is Finney’s hope to be able to fight in a class closer to his weight, as going up against heavier opponents does carry its share of pitfalls.

“We want to find somebody. I can’t keep going up in weight classes and having guys keep dodging me. It’s been tough, but I believe that we can find someone at 185 or even 205,” Finney said. “I thought that I did pretty well (Saturday), but I can’t keep fighting 265-pound guys when I’m at around 210. In fighting, you’ve got a puncher’s chance. All it takes is one punch to be landed and you can get knocked down.”

In addition to his next fight, Finney will also be in Gray July 6-8 for a wrestling camp hosted by Factory Sports Training from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day.
