For a team that is on the shorter end of experience, the smallest steps into a season stand as a form of on-the-job training.
Such was the case on Saturday night in the JCHS gymnasium as the Greyhounds built an early edge against Houston County before shaking off a late charge by the Bears to win 60-54.
“They’re coming along. As long as they play hard and we worry about small things like making passes and not turning the ball over, we’ll be alright,”

The Greyhounds, who built a 27-17 halftime lead, closed out the win in the fourth quarter by withstanding the Bears going to a full-court press as the JCHS lead was cut to two possessions in the closing minutes. Jones County was six-of-nine from the free-throw line in the final quarter, helping to protect the late advantage.
“Guys really have to be poised in that situation. That was a really good situation for them to be in,” Reese said The Greyhounds got plenty of complimentary offense during Saturday’s scrimmage. While Tyler Wold did most of his work to the inside by way of scoring 12 points, half of them being in the third quarter, Jakeylan Wilburn, Chance Banks and Justin Ray sank a combined four threepoint shots during a game in which Wilburn’s 20 points led the Greyhounds. Of those 20 points, six came in the first quarter.
Jones County returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Warner Robins.
