Hounds down Dacula ahead of home opener against Perry

DACULA - They may have been further from home than the week before, but the result was similar for the Greyhounds. Keyed by coming up with an early turnover, Jones County led early before dropping the hammer in the second half in scoring 21 unanswered points to win. This time, the late dominance resulted in a 35-14 at Dacula on Friday. It’s the Greyhounds second road win over a GHSA Class AAAAAAA team in as many seasons against a Falcons squad that was a AAAAAA semifinalists a season ago.

Next up? The friendly confines of Greyhound Field for the home opener on Friday against Perry. The Panthers, a AAAA quarterfinal team last year, have already shown an ability to put up a lot of points, losing 57-56 this past to Houston County. In that loss, they rolled up 527 total yards with Armar Gordon passing for 380 yards. It stands to be the toughest challenge so far for a Greyhounds defense that has given up an average up 18 but also gain a measure of revenge against Ola and Locust Grove. JCHS goes to Locust Grove Sept. 8 and hosts Ola Sept. 15.

Jones County began this week by stepping outside of the region, hosting Houston County prior to playing at a familiar foe but new one to the region on Thursday by going to Warner Robins. The rigor of the schedule will pick up next week with a Tuesday game at Mary Persons and Wednesday home contest against Union Grove, with the latter of those two possibly playing a role as the season goes on in terms of region tournament seedings.

Jones County was fourth in the region standings as the week began, a half-game in front of Warner Robins. Both teams are the only other teams besides Union Grove, Ola and Locust Grove that are not winless so far in region play.
