The JCHS track teams left Saturday’s Eagles Landing Chick-fil-A Invitational with plenty to cluck about.
Fueled by top finishes in short and long-distance events as well as in the field events on the boys side, the Greyhounds finished second among 17 teams with the Lady Hounds coming in fourth.
The Greyhounds’ secondplace finish came thanks to taking first or second in at least one short-distance, long-distance and field event. Zion Ragins’ pursuit of graduating with another state title appears to be well underway after his 10:48 time won first in the 100-meter dash with Tyler Stewart winning third on a time of 10:69. Stewart was also second in the 200 meters with a time of 21.79.
In addition to winning first in the 4x100 relay and second in the 4x800, Austin Hanks’ throw of 147-8 won the discus and was fourth in the shot put, throwing 43-3. Jayden Simmons was sixth in the discus at 111.5.
Tyler Marshall and Luke Thornton finished second and third in the 3,200 meters with times of 10:08.37 and 10:14.79. Andrew Marshall came in fifth in the 1,600 meters and seventh in the 3,200 meters with times of 4:49.94 and 2:10.42. Grady Newby was also seventh in the 1,600 meters, running a 5:07.70. The Lady Greyhounds finish was powered by what they were able to do in the distance events, as runners who led JCHS to another cross-country region title last fall posted similar results. Jones County swept the top two finishing positions in the 1,600 meters with Addison Robinson winning first with a time of 5:37.47 and Isabella Sanchez in second at 5:39.85, just ahead of fifth-place Rylee Barnwell and her time of 7:39.85.
Lilly Palmer won the 3,200 meters with a time of 12:51.51, two spots in front of Camryn Wommack’s time of 13:18.98. Sanchez was fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:33.06 and Addison Robinson in seventh by way of a time of 2:35.05.
Supplementing the Lady Hounds’ finish was a secondplace finish in the 4x800 relay and Kemora Sydey’s time of 1:01.23 giving her a finish of seventh in the 400 meters.
Both the Greyhounds and Lady Greyhounds are scheduled to compete again at the James Rollerson Memorial Relays Saturday and at the Putnam County Invitational March 21.
