Lady Hounds are region champions

SOCCER HOUNDS

Like many teams at JCHS, the Lady Greyhounds got a degree of respite last week by way of spring break.

Rested and recharged, Jones County emerged back onto the schedule this week with plenty more at stake.

The final moving and shaking at the top of the region came to a close on Monday, and the result was one of history for Jones County soccer as the Lady Hounds, with a final region record of 8-1, clinched the region title. It’s believed to be the Lady Greyhounds first region title in program history.

A region title in hand, JCHS will host a first-round state tournament match on April 21 against the fourth seed from Region 6-AAAA, which was Centennial as of Monday.

Thankfully for Jones County, Monday was minus dramatics. With Union Grove’s 2-2 overtime win on Monday against Locust Grove, it tied Jones County for first place in the region with records of 8-1 and Locust Grove and Union Grove at 6-2.

As it turned out, the Lady Hounds by one account won the region Feb. 27 in the region opener when they beat Ola 2-0. That head-to-head win proved to be the tiebreaker for JCHS, making it region champions. The Lady Greyhounds got the region crown through some heavy lifting, having to play the second, third and fourth-place teams in the region on the road.

Now, a region title in hand, Jones County gets to open the postseason at home next week.
