Preseason scrimmages may not count toward official win-loss records. They do, however, show how well-prepped a team is just before results do indeed matter.
The Lady Greyhounds welcomed Social Circle to JCHS last Wednesday for a preseason scrimmage, and Jones County did many things well when it came to pitching, defense, and at the plate in a 9-1 win.
JCHS trotted out three pitchers as Ensley Barnes, Kaleigh Scarborough, and Makalyn Williams combined to hold Social Circle to a run. The Lady Hounds started fast at the plate. Spurred on by Rylee Johnson’s leadoff triple, Jones County put up three runs in the first and two more in the second to begin the runaway win.
“We came out and swung the bats well and were aggressive at the plate and got to see some people in different places,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Tripp Burt said. “It was good for us.”
The preseason win was hardly a victory against a walkover foe. The Redskins either advance to or contend for a spot in the state Elite 8 in Columbus each year. Social Circle has advanced within a round of Columbus the past three years, making it there in the 1A-D1 classification two years ago.
It’s a barometer that the Lady Hounds welcome.
“They’re a good team year-in and year-out and are historically in Columbus,” Burt said. “So, to face some good competition, that’s a good way to start things.”
