Distance Hounds set high marks at Jackson
The strength of Jones County’s distance-running pipeline was shown last Thursday at Jackson, with middle school runners being among the top performers. Becca Durrett won first place in the event’s 1,600-meter run, one spot ahead of Mary Barnwell as the Jones County duo swept the event’s top two finishing positions. Both runners were also third and fourth in the 800 meters, while in the 3,200-meter run, Catelen Myers and Banks Dyer were second and third.
Rylan Fuller led Jones County in the boys 3,200 meters, finishing second and third.
Soccer teams wrap up undefeated week
Jockeying for position in the conference standings continued within the ranks of middle school soccer last week, as Jones County’s boys fought to tie Jasper County 2-2 prior to pummeling Crawford County 7-0 on Thursday.
In girls’ action, Jones County won three times last week, taking down Monroe County 4-0 and 3-0 against Crawford County and Jasper County. Cari Green scored twice against Monroe County with Caroline Rickman and Isabella Bodnarchuk adding one apiece. The win against Jasper came thanks to a pair of goals from Emory Sanford and one from Marrissa Moore with the trio of goals against Crawford by Rickman, Sanford and Maysa Errahimi.
The Lady Hounds will enter the MGMSAL tournament on Saturday as the No. 2 seed.
Both teams wrapped up the regular season on Wednesday with the playoffs set for Saturday.
CRMS coasts to pair of wins ahead of postseason
Clifton Ridge finished its regular season with a league record of 6-2 following wins 13-3 against Henderson and 18-2 over Lamar County.
MJ Lane gave up three runs in a complete-game effort against Henderson to get the win on the mound. Registering hits for CRMS were Chase Hasty, Lane, Avery Gordon, Gavin Simon, Aaron Vaughan and Jay Stinson.
Hasty was the winning pitcher against Lamar, giving up two runs. Offensive leaders were Hasty, Lane, Micah Howard, Ethan Jones, Gordon, Simon, Stinson and Tae Goolsby.
Clifton Ridge took on Gray Station in the first round of the playoffs on Wednesday.
