There’s a bit of duality for the Greyhounds coming away from their second open date of the season and looking to the final two games of the regular season. The first of those is on Friday when JCHS closes out the home slate of the regular season on senior night against Eagles Landing.
Jones County is coming away from an off week in which a few days of practice was mixed with time to rest up and for coaches to get a look at potential postseason opponents.
“It was great. We got a couple good days of practice in and had two days off and had a long weekend off,” Greyhounds head coach Mike Chastain said. “We had a really good week of practice. We’re getting better each week. Even though we lost a tough one (last month) to Stockbridge, I think we’ve gotten better since the Ola loss. I’m excited about where we are and about the seed we could be in the playoffs and feel like we have a chance to do pretty well.”
Speaking of the postseason, JCHS heads to the final two weeks of the season likely to finish third in the region with a slight chance at slipping into the second spot. To vault past secondplace Ola, the Hounds would first need to beat Eagles Landing and Locust Grove the next two weeks and either have Ola lose its final two games to Hampton and McDonough or have Hampton beat Ola to force a three-way tie, forcing the postseason position to be broken by a tiebreaker.
But even though other outside factors could impact where JCHS finishes in the region, that’s not where the focus lies for the Greyhounds.
“We talk about it often,” Chastain said of not worrying too much about other game results. “The big thing for us is to try and focus on us and getting better each day.”
In fact, Jones County welcomes an Eagles Landing team to Greyhound Field on Friday that is 3-3 and fifth in the region, putting them in position to sneak into the playoffs should teams ahead of them slip up to a degree.
The Eagles have lost three of four, falling 31-6 the last time out to Hampton.
“They’re very athletic, and anytime you play a team like that, it always poses a challenge,” Chastain said.
