Following a span of games in and out of region play, the Volley Hounds faced varying levels of competition last week, going 3-2 overall.
That included a strong end to the week, getting a road sweep of both Northside and Warner Robins on Thursday that followed a Tuesday win against Hampton by scores of 25-20 and 25-11 while JCHS dropped its region matches to ELCA and Eagles Landing.
As the season creeps back into region opponents making their onto the schedule, Jones County is seeing different styles of play.
“They are getting back into region play, and the hitters in region play are much stronger than what we were seeing at the start of the season,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Leah Bodnarchuk said. “That’s something that we’re going to have to work at.”
Part of that work came last Thursday, as the Lady Hounds came home from Warner Robins with a sweep of the action.
After starting with a win against Northside, Jones County’s 25-19 and 25-15 victories against the Demonettes gave it a pair of match victories.
“It’s helpful to be out here against another team. It’s helpful to be able to try new things out,” Bodnarchuk said.
“We had several in new positions, so we wanted to see how they’d play against a different team.”
JCHS was led by the play of Zakeena Sturgeon, who had a combined 10 aces and 7 digs in the two matches. Sturgeon helped the Lady Greyhounds get off to a strong start in the second game against Warner Robins, serving to a 6-0 lead before Warner Robins evened the score at 9. JCHS answered, leading 10-9 on a point by Caroline Rickman with key plays by Isabella Bodnarchuk and Rickman helping to an 18-12 edge prior to Addyson Bell getting the final game to match point.
