Crime Watch

The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department Aug. 8-27, 2022.

Aug. 8

Officer Pointer was observing traffic on West Clinton Street when he noticed a vehicle pass by with the driver holding and looking at a cell phone. The officer caught up to the driver and conducted a traffic stop. When Pointer made contact with the driver, the male advised the officer he was watching YouTube.

Pointer returned to his patrol car and checked the driver’s information through the GCIC and learned that his license had been suspended. The driver was asked to step out of his vehicle and placed in handcuffs. Pointer transported the offender to the Jones County LEC where he was cited for suspended license and unlawful use of a wireless device then turned over to the jail staff for processing.

Aug. 9

Officer Pointer responded to a local business in reference to a shoplifting case. When the officer made contact with the store manager, the manager provided Pointer with information of the offender and video footage and also information on the offender’s name. Pointer was able to locate the offender’s information through dispatch.

The officer contacted the subject and advised him he had seen the video at the business of him shoplifting and he needed to meet Pointer at the Gray PD to receive a citation and criminal trespass notification.

The offender arrived at the Gray PD and met with Pointer in the front lobby which at this time he was issued the citation and notification. The offender advised Pointer he understood the charges and admitted he made a poor decision. Pointer advised the offender of his court date and the business requested prosecution and that the offender be banned from the business.

Aug. 13

Officer Pointer was monitoring traffic when he observed a vehicle with an expired tag decal showing 2021. At that time, he got behind the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. While waiting on the vehicle to pull over, he could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the open windows of the vehicle. When Pointer made contact with the driver and passenger his suspicion of the marijuana was confirmed. A stronger odor was coming from inside the vehicle. Both the driver and passenger were asked to exit the vehicle and the passenger advised the officer there was a container in the car with marijuana in it. Backup arrived on scene and at that time, Pointer searched the interior of the vehicle locating the container with the marijuana inside.

The red container contained a clear baggie of marijuana, a cigarette box was found with an additional baggie of marijuana, a skull smoking pipe, rolling papers, scissors, clamp, and a clear round container with suspected burnt marijuana cigar ends. The passenger advised Pointer that the drugs belonged to him. The passenger was then placed in handcuffs and transported to the Jones County LEC where he was issued a citation for possession of marijuana less than one ounce. The driver was issued a citation for expired tag and released from the scene.

Aug. 18

Deputy Sullivan was on patrol when he noticed a vehicle traveling on Joycliff Road with no license plate. At that time, Sullivan initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver

MORE CRIME WATCH >> A7 stopped and Sullivan made contact with him advising the reason for the stop. The driver advised the deputy that he recently bought the car. A few minutes later, Inv. Hall arrived on the scene and stood by while Sullivan ran the driver’s license and vehicle information. As the driver was talking to Inv. Hall, Sullivan asked the subject if he would mind if he looked inside the vehicle. The driver complied with the deputy. While Sullivan was looking in the car, he found a yellow square container in the driver’s side floorboard. When the deputy opened the container, three white rocks of suspected cocaine fell out of the container. Sullivan, at that time, advised Inv. Hall of his findings.

The driver was then handcuffed and transported to the Jones County LEC where he was given a citation for tag requirements and a warrant was secured for possession of cocaine. The offender was turned over to jail staff for processing.

Aug. 27

Sgt. Walker was monitoring traffic on Hwy. 57 when Deputy Harden notified him that there was a vehicle coming towards him that showed up on his tag reader there was no insurance on the vehicle. Walker attempted a traffic stop at that time, however the driver continued further down the road before pulling over to stop. Walker immediately smelled the odor of marijuana inside the vehicle when the driver rolled the window down. The Sgt. advised the driver he had plenty of time to stop and he was pulled over due to no insurance showing on the vehicle. The driver was detained at that time and Walker had to warn him several times to stop attempting to move backwards, as from the sargeant training and experience, subjects that do this use it as a tactic to snatch away from you and run. Harden arrived on scene and detained the passenger in the vehicle. When the passenger stepped out of the car, Walker heard Harden tell the passenger that he saw the marijuana he dropped and was standing on. Both subjects were placed in Walker’s patrol vehicle at that time. Walker ran the names of the driver and passenger through GCIC/NCIC system and discovered that both of them had warrants. A probable cause search was done on the vehicle and produced a methamphetamine pipe, and MDMA pill was located inside of a black bag on the passenger side. A fanny pack was also found on the floor of the driver’s side with a black scale in it along with the driver’s identification. Walker asked the driver and passenger if they had any drugs on their person before they went to the jail and crossed the guard lines. The passenger advised Walker that he had some meth in his sock. The meth was retrieved. During a further search of the vehicle, Harden located some crack cocaine on the driver side floor inside a plastic wrapper. The vehicle was towed from the scene and the driver and passenger was transported to the Jones County LEC. The driver was charged with possession of crack cocaine and no insurance. The passenger was charged with the possession of meth, possession of MDMA (ecstasy) and possession of marijuana less than one ounce.
