BOC approves mapping of indigent cemetery

Questions about Jones County’s indigent cemetery were once again a major topic at the Board of Commissioners’ second Tuesday meeting. Board Chairman Chris Weidner called the Feb. 20 meeting to order, and the prayer and pledge were led by Julie King.

STAR student, teacher recognized by Kiwanis

Evan McGalliard is the Jones County High School STAR Student for 2024. McGalliard chose Morgan Jarvis, a teacher at the Jones County High School, as the STAR Teacher for 2024. The Jones County Kiwanis Club sponsors the program and honored McGalliard and Jarvis at their meeting Feb.

Chiefs bring suggestion for staffing of fire departments

As if transitioning to paid firefighters in Jones County was not enough of a challenge, the Board of Commissioners is also preparing for the retirement of the department’s current director. Don Graham has served as Jones County’s Emergency Management Director since his appointment in 2009.

Cruelty to animals results in 15-year sentence

One of two defendants in an animal cruelty case entered received a sentence of 15 years following the entry of a guilty plea. Lisa Michelle Barnes entered her plea Feb. 15 in Jones County Superior Court. She was sentenced to five years for each of four counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

Early voting underway for presidential primary

As voting looms large in national news across broadcast stations and social media, advance voting has begun in Jones County as Georgia’s Presidential Primary approaches next month. Advance voting started Feb. 19 and will continue through March 8, including Saturdays, during the hours of9 a.m.
