Mr. Stephen Mathews, Sr., 78, of Gray, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Graveside memorial services were at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery, Saturday, August 31, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. with the Reverend Steve Johnson officiating. The family greeted friends at Hart’s Mortuary Jones County Chapel, Friday, August 30, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Stephen was born in Macon, Georgia to Donald and Martha Mathews and graduated in 1964 from Lanier High School. He proudly served our country in the U.S.
Army. Stephen worked as an industrial engineer in the avionics division at Robins Air Force Base for over 40 years. He was a long-time and faithful member of Northridge Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Stephen is preceded in death by his former wife, Judith Head Mathews, and wife, Elaine Wood Mathews.
Stephen is survived by his sons, Steve Mathews (Amy) of Frederick, Colorado, Chris Mathews (Trissi) of Gray, Michael Mathews of Macon, and Scott Mathews (Shellie) of Warner Robins, Georgia; eleven grandchildren, Ashley Kauza (Nick), Stephanie Mathews, Stephen Mathews, Brandon Mathews, Dylan Mathews (Rebecca), Dalton Mathews (Zoey), Ansleigh Mathews (Daniel), Emma Mathews, Dakota Philmon, Caleigh Philmon, and Sarah Mathews; four great-grandchildren, Colt Mathews, River Mathews, Ryder Mathews, and Paxton Childres; brother, Donald Wayne Mathews (Harriet) of Colbert, Georgia; and five nieces and nephews; David Mathews (Linda), Leigh Segell (Mark), Dennis Palmer (Martyne), Kendall Thompson, and Trey Palmer.
