Jack was born in Pembroke, Virginia, to the late Jack O’Hara Grant, Sr. and Virginia Thigpen (Price, Grant). He was a graduate of Lanier High School, in 1957 and the University of Georgia in 1961. While at Georgia, he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. For over 40 years, he worked as a general contractor in various capacities. He served as Vice-President of Grant Construction Company, where he was instrumental in the building of apartment complexes around the state. He served as President of the Home Builders Association of Macon, and President of the Home Builders Association of Georgia.
One subdivision in South Macon has roads for his name’s sake, North and South O’Hara Drive. But particularly “No Jack Lane,” where legend has it, he was rejected multiple times. He was a member of Idle Hour Country Club, an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman.
He loved his family and connecting with children.
He coached little league and was always present for his kids’ sporting events.
He served as the announcer for Stratford football games. Always the life of the party, his antics gained him the name of “Crazy Man” from his great nieces. He never met a stranger and loved to talk. But most of all, he was a believer in Christ, serving as a Sunday school teacher and member of the choir.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Kathleen Welton Grant; children; Tim Grant, Tom Grant (Kay), Kelly Grant Marrero (Gabriel), stepchildren; Elizabeth Shelby Baldwin (Steven), Stephanie Shelby Williams (Ricky), a sister; Carolyn Grant Smothers (Tom); Grandchildren; Courtney Grant, Brittany Grant, Thomas Philbrick, Tim Seipler, Leigh Philbrick Alvarez, Katie Baldwin, Chandler Baldwin, Savannah Williams Binkley, Jackson Williams, Mishay Bingham; 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
