After two weeks of scrimmaging and practicing against one another amongst only themselves, Saturday called for an audience when it came to the Greyhounds and Lady Greyhounds on the basketball court.
The evening’s purple and white game broke both teams up into respective split squads. Unlike the last two weeks of practice, Saturday had both teams competing underneath the watchful eyes of fans, something that will help both coaching staffs evaluate players even further ahead of the Nov. 13 season-opener at Warner Robins.
“Practice is one thing, but there’s nothing like a game,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Takeo Gray said. “You want to see how they do in front of a crowd.”
For the Greyhounds, the roster was not the only thing on display at the JCHS Gymnasium. New uniforms were unveiled, too, with players wearing both purple and gold jerseys and shorts.
“It definitely helps you simulate a game situation and get the nerves out, but it’s also exciting for them to show off their new uniforms,” Greyhounds head coach Dylan Dupree said. “We’ve been going at it for about two weeks, so to come out here and compete, that’s a big thing for them.”
Through those two weeks, Dupree, a Greyhounds’ first-year head coach, says he has already learned plenty about his team.
“Work ethic is biggest thing. There are a lot of athletes on this team,” Dupree said. “Our identity is that we want to play in transition and show how athletic we are. The other thing is conditioning and being dedicated in the weight room. They have really bought into what Coach (Williams) is trying to do with them in the weight room.”
