Lady Hounds edge Union Grove, in position to claim share of region title

GIRLS SOCCER

A season ago, close games ended up being the difference for the Lady Greyhounds between winning a region title and finishing fourth in the region.

This year? Jones County has thrived in that pressure cooker, and that performance against the region’s frontrunners stood tall last Tuesday at Union Grove in a 1-0 win against the Wolverines. That win gives Jones County a share of the region title as long as it wins Thursday at Eagles Landing. JCHS also beat Woodland 10-0 Friday, improving to 11-3 overall.

The Lady Hounds earned their shot at a region title the hard way. Against Ola, Locust Grove and Union Grove, all ranked within the top four of the region, Jones County is 2-1 with each contest being played on the road.

JCHS can finish no worse than second in the region, adding up to a home match in the first round of the state tournament. Jones County’s only region loss is to Locust Grove. A win next Monday by Locust Grove against Union Grove would give the Wildcats the region title, with a loss by Locust Grove giving JCHS the region title outright.
