The focus for the Lady Greyhounds’ during the summer didn’t get established in early June.
Rather, it was way back in February following a second-round state tournament loss to Northview in which the goal for the summer was simple — to take on and embrace a challenging run of competition.
“It’s been a great summer for us so far,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Takeo Gray said. “After we lost to Northview, I decided that we needed a tougher non-region schedule since we only have seven non-region games.”
Jones County has done just that. Along with workouts and scrimmages against teams like Westside Macon and Lamar County, the Lady Hounds have also played multiple teams at venues such as LakePoint Sports Complex in north Georgia as well as going to tournaments hosted by college programs all over the state. JCHS went 4-0 at Columbus State’s event, 2-1 last weekend at Georgia, and 2-1 at Valdosta State.
And there was more to those camps than just travel. At Lakepoint, Jones County beat Central and Brookwood with one of its losses being in double overtime to Hebron Christian.
Through their summer work, the Lady Greyhounds have gotten to dig deeper on their roster due to Kamiyah Adams and Desirae Dumas being injured. That, combined with the graduation of Mya Anderson has opened the door even more to players up and down the roster to step into bigger roles.
Gray points out that Aubrey Norris averaged around 20 points per game at the Lakepoint tournament with Autumn Coleman showing more versatility.
“We’ve really seen a lot more energy on defense and rebounding; it’s been tremendous,” Gray said. “We’ve gotten a lot of comments from other coaches on our defensive intensity.”
