Summer workouts underway for Hounds

Alan Jackson may have sung a version of the song in the 1990s about the “Summertime Blues,” but there’s nothing blue about the acceleration of Jones County’s summer football workouts.

When the calendar turned over to June last week, the Greyhounds kicked off the summer portion of their offseason, a span that began with a mix of workouts, weight lifting, and meetings from around 7 a.m. each day toward the middle of the day.

It’s a design geared to help the schedules of the families of Greyhounds players, helping as many as possible to be able to attend.

“We try to time it up where most people are going to work. Folks who work can drop their kids off, and we’re able to feed them breakfast and lunch,” Greyhounds head coach Justin Montgomery said. “It helps us to have them when their minds and bodies are fresh in the morning, it allows us to max out the time of viewing film and reviewing that so we can also go home and capitalize and see our families as coaches, as well.”

The morning sessions will eventually peel back, Montgomery says, when the acclimation period arrives in late July ahead of the first official day of practice being permitted on July 27.

“We’ll have to get used to those elements the closer we get to kickoff,” Montgomery said.
