Jones County High School will begin the 2026-27 year with new athletic leadership in place.
Charles David, who was elevated to the position of athletic director for the school system in April of 2025, announced his retirement in a social media post on July 13, shortly after his was among the announced retirements following the same night’s Jones County Board of Education meeting. David held the same role at Clifton Ridge Middle for 23 years prior to 16 months at JCHS.
Jones County High School will announce its new athletic leadership structure at a later date, according to Jones County School System Communications Director Adam Gillhouse.
David posted the following in a social media post on July 13:
After much prayer and discussion, I have decided to retire from the Jones County School System. As I begin the next chapter of my life in retirement, I have so many I would like to thank.
Serving the students, coaches, families, and community of Jones County has been one of the greatest honors of my professional career. Every game, every practice, every championship, every challenge, and every relationship has left an imprint on my heart. I have been incredibly blessed to work alongside dedicated coaches who pour their hearts into developing young men and women, supportive administrators and staff who believe in our mission, and a community that has always taken tremendous pride in Greyhound Athletics.
To our student-athletes, thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your journey. Watching you grow—not only as competitors but as leaders, extraordinary young men and women, and people of character—has been the greatest reward. I will forever be grateful. Your commitment, resilience, and passion are what make Jones County athletics special.
To our coaches, thank you for your countless hours, your sacrifice, and your unwavering commitment to excellence. The success of our athletic programs is a direct reflection of your dedication to our students. It has been a privilege to serve alongside each of you. I love the passion and dedication you bring to work every day. I am forever in your debt.
To the Jones County School System, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to lead the Clifton Ridge athletic department for 23 years, and the Jones County High School athletic department for the past 16 months. It has been a dream come true. I am grateful for your support, your confidence, and your shared commitment to providing outstanding opportunities for our students. Most importantly, a huge thank-you to all my administrators and mentors. I would have never been afforded the opportunity to do this if it weren’t for your guidance, leadership, and support!
To the Jones County community, thank you for embracing my family and me over the past 30 years. Your passion for our schools and your unwavering support of our athletes have made Jones County a truly special place to call home. I will forever cherish the friendships, memories, and experiences we’ve shared together.
Most importantly, I want to thank my family. To my incredible wife, Amy, thank you for your endless encouragement, patience, sacrifice, and love throughout my career. You have been my greatest supporter through every long day, late night, and busy season. None of this would have been possible without you.
To my daughters, Hannah and Mary Grace, thank you for sharing your dad with so many others over the years. A lot of time was given to others while you were waiting for me to come home from practices, games, and meetings. Your love, understanding, and constant encouragement have meant more than you’ll ever know. I am incredibly proud of the women you have become, and I look forward to spending even more time with each of you as this new chapter begins.
