With a total of four matches last week against region teams, the Volley Hounds were in arguably their most critical stretch of the season. How Jones County fared against those teams is likely to say a lot about its odds of hosting a firstround match in the state tournament, which opens next weekend.
In the end, the Lady Hounds (29-8 overall) made an emphatic statement that they are not just content with a program record for wins. With a sweep of Ola and Perry and a split in Saturday’s region tournament by way of beating Warner Robins and losing to Union Grove in three games, JCHS has cemented its postseason position.
As of the PSR rankings at the start of this week, Jones County was seventh, the highest of any team in its region.
That placed them in front of Ola and Union Grove. Last Tuesday’s win against Ola arguably aided the Lady Hounds’ cause greatly. After dropping the first game 25-8, JCHS edged the Mustangs 26-24 before winning the third and decisive game 15-10 against an Ola team that has eclipsed the 30-win mark. Jones County also topped Perry on Tuesday, winning 25-19 and 25-22.
The Volley Hounds continued their strong play on Saturday in the region tournament. Even though the day included a loss to Union Grove in the third game 15-7 after each team won 25-17 in the first two contests, the taking care of Warner Robins 25-7 and 25-18 further strengthen Jones County’s PSR position.
The Lady Hounds concluded the regular season this past Tuesday against Rutland.
