Lady Hounds show off defensive acumen in scrimmage win
If there was any question about what kind of brand of basketball that the Lady Hounds intend to play with new head coach Takeo Gray at the helm, that was answered during Saturday’s scrimmage against Houston County.
Jones County flustered the visiting Bears early and often, cranking up the defensive pressure to force turnovers and toss Houston County off of its offensive rhythm, holding them to three points through one quarter and in single digits after a half play before going on to win 50-26.
JCHS led 18-3 after the first eight minutes and 30-9 at the break.
“I was impressed with our defense. That’s what we focus on,” Gray said. “We want to play hard defensively and get up and down the floor and get points in transition, that’s our goal.”
With a defensive effort like that, Jones County was able to spread Houston County out, getting key shots converted both in the paint and from the outside.
“It was good to see what we’ve been working on and that getting executed,” Gray said.
Brad Harrison Autumn Coleman’s 14 points led the Lady Hounds with 12 coming from Mya Anderson. Coleman knocked down a trio of three pointers with one each by Anderson and Liberty Pennamon.
“We’ve beat up on each other so much, so that was all exciting to see,” Gray said. “In the end we got a lot of our JV girls in, so it was great to see them all cheering for each other all game long.”
The Lady Hounds, who opened the season this past Tuesday against Putnam County, host Warner Robins next Tuesday.
