The Jones County Board of Tax Assessors had its first meeting with a full board in more than a year.Board Chairman Leigh Stanford called the July 3 meeting to order and welcomed new board member Tina Presley. The new board member was sworn in by Superior Court Clerk Pam Dixon June 28.

Arson suspect found dead in apparent suicide

A fire at a local business Sunday morning was discovered not to be accidental when the person who set the blaze was located deceased inside with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Morgan Roy Turk is the local veteran of the week. He graduated from Mercer University in 1956 and received a regular U.S. Army commission as a second lieutenant in January of 1957. He had assignments in Fort Lee, Va., Fort Benning, Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Carson, Colo., Fort Rucker, Ala.

Summer Reading continues at Jones County library

The Summer Reading program at the Jones County Library continues into July with a full schedule of programs.The library’s bulletin board is filled with 1,106 names of youngsters enrolled in the program with numerous prizes waiting to be awarded at the end of the summer.
